About us
A community centred response to a global threat
Zero AMR Initiative is a youth led, community centred public health initiative addressing antimicrobial resistance through prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, WASH, One Health, environmental and climate action, youth participatory research, innovation, community engagement, and policy and advocacy.
We believe AMR cannot be solved by hospitals, laboratories or policymakers alone. Communities must be part of the response.
Our work connects public health knowledge with lived experience. We engage young people, students, schools, communities, healthcare professionals, institutions and partners to understand local challenges and develop practical responses, focused on preventing infections, promoting responsible antimicrobial use, strengthening health literacy, protecting environmental health, supporting evidence generation, and encouraging stronger policies and systems.
Our work currently focuses on Rwanda and South Sudan, with a vision to contribute to stronger AMR prevention efforts beyond these communities.
Why we exist
Antimicrobial resistance is often discussed through statistics and technical language. But AMR is ultimately about people. It is about whether a mother survives childbirth, whether a newborn survives an infection, whether a routine operation stays safe, and whether the medicines a community depends on still work when they are needed.
Purpose, mission and vision
Purpose
To reduce the spread and impact of antimicrobial resistance by addressing the factors that drive resistance and the systems that can prevent it.
Mission
To reduce the spread and impact of AMR through education, prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, WASH, One Health action, research, innovation, partnerships, community engagement, and evidence based advocacy.
Vision
A world with zero preventable deaths from antimicrobial resistance, where informed communities work together to safeguard antimicrobials and protect public health for present and future generations.
What guides our work
Our values are not a statement on a wall. They decide what we do when the work is difficult.
Impact
We focus on meaningful and measurable change. We ask not only how many people we reached, but what changed because of our work. Meaningful change requires moving from ideas to action, so we encourage initiative, ownership and practical contribution at every level of our work.
Inclusion and Equity
Everyone deserves access to accurate health information, quality care and the opportunity to participate in decisions that affect their health. We intentionally include voices that are often overlooked.
Community
We listen before we act. We respect lived experience and work with communities to develop solutions that respond to real needs.
Youth Leadership
Young people are partners, leaders, innovators and contributors to solutions. We create meaningful opportunities for youth to participate and lead.
Evidence
We value credible knowledge, responsible health communication and learning from what works. Evidence should guide action and strengthen decision making.
Collaboration
AMR cannot be solved by one discipline, institution or sector. We build partnerships across health, education, communities, government, research and environment.
Integrity
We communicate honestly, use evidence responsibly and remain accountable to the communities and partners we serve.
Innovation
We encourage practical, creative and context sensitive approaches to addressing AMR and strengthening community health.
Accountability
We take responsibility for our commitments, decisions and results, and strive to communicate our progress transparently.
Our commitment
Our team is united by a simple belief: preventing AMR is everyone’s responsibility. We are building a movement where communities are heard, young people are empowered to contribute, evidence informs action, partnerships create scale, and impact is measured by meaningful change.
Different people. Different expertise. One mission: Zero Preventable Deaths from AMR.
